I was fortunate enough to visit Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island, Maine, last month. I was only there for a couple of days so I came home with many potential paintings rattling around inside my head.

This is the first one that I painted after returning home.  We’d visited Sand Beach on a somewhat overcast day which cast a muted pearly light over everything.  My painting location that day was determined by the wind and flying sand.  I set up somewhere that I could actually paint and then figured out what to paint from there.  You can see my sketch from that day here: https://www.poppybalser.com/workszoom/4865835/sand-beach-boulders#/

I was fascinated by the colours in the weathered rocks. Scoured pale by salt and wind and flying sand, they gleamed almost white where the flat tops faced the sun.  The planes facing me hinted at their actual makeup of pink granite.  Where they are kept damp by the ocean they receded into dark shaded neutrals.

I painted this to explore all those colours and the wonderful variety of shapes that made up the shore.
