I painted these for the sheer enjoyment of spending more time with these stunning foxgloves that had seeded themselves in my garden this year. I love growing things- vegetables are practical but flowers are so much more delightful. Sadly, my gardens have taken a back seat to painting in recent years. So when these flowers popped up, unplanned, unexpected and yet so welcome, I was delighted. I sketched them in the garden, using watercolours to make the best use of time. But I knew when it came time to paint them in the studio, I would be using oil paints.
I wanted to capture the delicate shimmering quality of the cascading towers of blossoms. So even though this was a complex painting, I balanced that complexity by keeping a lot of the painted areas a bit soft-edged to convey the calm, airy feeling of being in a garden where the tall stems of flowers are swaying gently in the most gentle of summer breezes.
