Painting the Coastal Landscape is a series of 5 modules focused on helping artists get comfortable painting the elements of a coastal landscape. It starts with a module on skies, moves on to water and then greens and trees, followed by rocks.  The final module lets artists apply the lessons from previous modules while painting one coastal landscape scene.

I have taught these concepts in similar lessons before, and have had nothing but positive feedback.  This new workshop will cover the same concepts as previous workshops, but I’ve made some differences in how I will deliver it.  I have recorded the exercises in advance, and will release each module at two week intervals, starting on October 28. The workshop consists of just over 10 hours of video instruction.  There will be no live classes to join.  You will have the opportunity to ask questions, within the cohort grid, either with your submitted homework, or by posting questions in the class threads.

What makes this class special is the opportunity to get individualized and direct feedback from me, both written feedback and visual illustrations of my suggestions to help you strengthen your work. I direct my feedback to help you understand the concepts of the exercise and to guide you forward in your painting journey.  I encourage participants to paint the exercises I demonstrate and post their work within the Vivify classroom space.  I will provide both written and visual feedback to students on one exercise per module.  I write to explain what is well done, and what can be improved upon. This is supplemented with digital edits overlaid right over student’s submitted work to show exactly what I mean with my written words.  Past participants have found this very useful.

Here’s a peek inside Module 4, on painting rocks, which includes two recorded painting exercises.

Exercise 1: Boulders:  The recording is 70 minutes long and the topics I cover include: using edges effectively, mixing neutral colours, simplifying and connecting shapes, painting the shapes of rocks, observing and portraying bouncing light.

Exercise 2: Rocks in the Water.  The recorded exercise is 75 minutes long.  I cover: mixing neutral colours, identifying light and dark areas in a scene, painting wet rocks, softening the edges for white sea foam, connecting the rocks and the water.
